We present a comprehensive analysis of the Wess-Zumino anomaly effective action of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories in components. After reviewing the coset construction of the Wess-Zumino action in the presence of an unbroken subgroup, the gauging of the conformal algebra and the Wess-Zumino effective action for non-supersymmetric conformal field theories with a U(1) symmetry in two and four dimensions, we revisit the superconformal anomalies of $\mathcal{N}=1$ conformal supergravity.
