The result holds in every dimension. We assume no bounds on curvature or volume growth. This establishes the properly embedded case of the finite-index version of do Carmo's question. For nonzero mean curvature, we use the radii of inscribed balls to define a positive weight. This weight gives a polynomial bound on weighted volume, while its reciprocal satisfies a differential inequality involving the Jacobi operator.
